This started as an experiment with tapes but after failing many times (I’m not patience enough to wait until it’s safe to use tapes on my nails) I settled with making a simple rainbow drip nail art.

My plan is to make a rainbow nail art.. But ended up making a Lady Rainicorn nail art instead.

I use acrylic for most part of her body and figured the cause of my nail art problems: Thick paints and not-thoroughly-cleaned nail art brush. OTL

How to make this nail art:

  1. Apply base coat.
  2. Apply base color.
  3. Make the head using nail art brush or dotting tools. I use needle for her limbs. I didn’t do this but you can also use white first and then layer it to make the color brighter, especially if your nail polish is on the thin side.
  4. Make her rainbow body using small nail art brush. Just like the previous step, making a white base first will make the colors look brighter.
  5. Paint the details like her mane, horn, eye and maybe additional decorations like clouds. I use dotting tool and needle for her eye and nail art brush for her mane, eye and the clouds.
  6. Apply top coat.

I saw a lot of nail art like this so I tried it out. I think the colors are a bit too close to each other but I like it.

I made this based on this tutorial.

Oh God, the white part looks so messy.. I did three layers for the base color and it’s still not opaque enough. And it shows thanks to an additional white layer between the white and the colorful part. ;_;

How to make this nail art:
1. Apply base coat.
2. Cover your nails with base color of your choice. Make sure it’s nice and opaque.
3. Apply different kind of colors on your nail vertically, but don’t cover your entire nails. Use 3-4 colors on each nails.
4. Carefully draw a black line in between the colors.Use a small brush or nail stipper for this.
5. Use the same color you used for the base color to tidy up your design.
6. Make a line between the white part and the colorful part using glitter polish or/and decorate it with stickers or rhinestones.
7. Apply top coat.

You need a crackle nail polish to make this. A lot of brand carry this kind of nail polish like O.P.I, China Glaze, Color Club, Sally Hansen, Missha.. Etude House also carry crackle nail polish if I’m not mistaken..

How to make this nail art:
1. Apply base coat to protect your nail.
2. This is optional, but you can paint your nail white to make the color more opaque and stands out.
3. Apply the first color to your nail using a sponge, cover only about 1/6 part of your nail. For those with small nails, use small sponge (you can cut or tear a piece from bigger sponge) or eye shadow applicator.
4. Apply the second color the same way as the first color, cover the other 1/6 part of your nail. Repeat this step with the next color until you cover your whole nail with different colors.
5. You don’t have to be super tidy on doing step 3 and 4, you don’t even have to wait for each color to dry before applying the next color until step 6 below.
6. Now that your nails are filled with colors, let your nails dry properly. This is important because crackle nail polish works best on completely dry nails.
7. Cover your nails with crackle nail polish of your choice. It is best if you practice first to get the hang of using your crackle nail polish. You can also browse for tips on the net since it’s kinda tricky especially if you’re new to crackle nail polish.
8. Apply top coat.
9. Clean the sides of your nail with cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover if needed since sponging technique usually leave a bit of mess on the sides of your nails. Yeah, just like in the picture.. I couldn’t wait to take nail art pictures I forgot to clean up my own messy nails. XP

How to make this Rainbow Dash inspired nail art:

  1. Apply base coat of your choice to protect your nail.
  2. Cover your nail with light blue nail polish.. Except for the one you want to paint with rainbow, cover that one with white.
  3. The rainbow part: Use a fine nail art brush or small dotting tool (supposedly you can use toothpick too) and paint 6 vertical stripes of color to your white painted nail. I started from the middle (I started with yellow) and work my rainbow to the sides of my nail.
  4. The cutie mark part: Get a good reference of the cutie mark and decide how it will be painted on your nail.
  5. Make the basic cloud shape using white nail polish and your favorite nail art brush/dotting tool/whatever. Apply two layer of cloud if necessary (white nail polishes tend to be thin and takes extra layers to make it opaque)
  6. Outline the cloud with blue polish (darker than the base color) using fine nail brush or small dotting tool. Mine looks sloppy because my dotting tool is not small enough for the task.. Oh okay, it’s actually just me, lacking nail art practices.. =P
  7. Start making the base of the thunder part with white nail polish. I start with the middle part, then make the small tip part and finished it with the large part that connects with the cloud. Don’t worry about covering the cloud outline because you can repair it later. You can use several different sized brushes/dotting tools/whatever for this.
  8. Color the thunder with blue, yellow and red. Use fine nail art brush or small dotting tool for this. Once again, please forgive my messy job on this part. OTL
  9. just in case my written instruction confused you, I made you a.. Uh, picture instruction:
  10. image For the non-cutie-mark clouds, you just need to make cloud blobs and outline it.
  11. In every step, I let each color to dry first before applying the next color. Don’t forget to clean your tools between colors too. It is important to be patient.
  12. Last, apply topcoat to protect your design and make it last longer. It is important to let everything dry properly first before applying top coat. If not, the top coat may mess up the colors and ruin your design. In my picture, you can see how the yellow part of the thunder is a bit stained from the blue part.
  13. You can also use fine glittered top coat for extra effect.

Apply base coat of your choice to protect your nail.
I didn’t do this for this nail art, but you can cover your nails with white polish first as base color.
Apply the first color of your choice on the base of your nail. Just cover 1/6 or 1/7 part of your nail, depending on how many color you want for your rainbow.
Apply the second color, cover the upper part of the first color a bit and then blend the color by tapping it gently with a sponge. Repeat this with the next color until you cover your nail with rainbow. I usually let each color dry first before applying the next one.
Cover the rainbow with glitter nail polish if you want. Fine glitter polish makes the rainbow blends better.. And cover blending mistakes rather nicely XP Be careful not to use too much or the color will fade under the glitters.
Feel free to decorate your rainbow with nail stickers/rhinestones/pearls/etc. I used stickers for this one.
Apply top coat.
